1/20/2006 - Gotta get some organization to this site ! Long promised clsid registry file to enable writing to CD etc.etc. may be found at the bottom of this page - link is clsidall.zip . This is a shotgun fix, but should enable many functions.
12/14/2005 - Have heard from several users wanting to add Desktop Properties to the Mindows installation. The following files should be added to the \system directory for this purpose :
desk.cpl
setupapi.dll
olesvr.dll
olecli.dll
and whoops, systhunk.dll
as a .bat file you might use this:
cd\win98
extract /a base4.cab /l c:\windows\system deskw95.cpl
extract /a base4.cab /l c:\windows\system olecli.dll
extract /a base4.cab /l c:\windows\system olesvr.dll
extract /a base4.cab /l c:\windows\system setupapi.dll
extract /a base4.cab /l c:\windows\system systhunk.dll
cd\windows\system
ren deskw95.cpl desk.cpl
Have also had requests for adding CD write capability. I have accomplished this by adding :
mmdevldr.vxd (sorry, corrected on 01/04/06)
stdole2.tlb
but there are a few CLSID entries that must be added to the registry. I will try to make a .reg file available for this purpose.
10/19/2005 - Have now heard from many users successful in setting up Mindows from min98.zip (link below). I will work on two additional "flavors" of the installation, one smaller, heading toward the original 7 Meg Mindows, the other larger, with the full 98 shell. It'll be awhile however.
In the meantime, what good is all of this? Once you have setup a small installation of Mindows, it is an easy matter to create a boot CD which is capable of the reading/writing of NTFS volumes, which can contain an anti-virus program (Fprot?), partition manager (Paragon?), etc. The advantages of this should be obvious. Moreover, the boot time is a matter of seconds, compared to the sluggish, albeit useful, Bart's boot CDs. Plus, it is fun to reduce Win98 to minimal and snappy OS. And one with which most of us are familiar, unlike some of the Linux based CDs.
10/13/20005 - Have now heard from 4 users successful in setting up Mindows from min98.zip
Answering questions from these users, no, it does not matter which setup option you select, with the exception of selecting "show me" in which case you can avoid installing the Win98 DOS files. product ID snag can be overcome with patching the setupx.dll with :
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=8751&pid=85911&st=0entry85911
(I cannot supply this patched file, or I might be found "gone missing.")
10/11/05 - Correction made in setup files to include notepad.exe it was missing. Also, only the root of the win98 directory need be copied from the Windows CD. Later I will provide instructions for making a boot CD that allows Mindows to be run from a ramdisk.
Instructions for Installing Mindows
Download min98.zip (link below)
Unzip min98.zip to a folder e.g. c:\min98
Copy c:\min98\*.* to your Windows setup directory e.g. c:\win98 , overwriting any files in that directory, if already present.
From a win95 installation or CD, copy into that same setup directory, the following files :
explorer.exe
comdlg32.dll
shell32.dll
notepad.exe
Note : The 95 files should be from an early version of Windows 95 that does NOT have the dreaded Internet Explorer "integrated" into the OS.
For the time being at least, copy the entire setup directory to a clean hard disk.
With only the clean hard disk in your system, boot from a floppy, and navigate to the setup directory.
Execute install.bat
Sit back and watch Mindows install.
Let me know how you make out at kludger@hotmail.com
